This Kenyan cabbage stew is made in many households almost everyday and its real easy to make. In most African countries, guests will often stop by at a moments notice, and often during meal times, so this recipe is great because you can make it quickly and it is always a favorite.

It usually served with Ugali or sometimes with plain rice.

To Make this recipe, you will need the following:


2 tbsp olive oil
1 large yellow or red onion, diced
2 tbsp fresh garlic cloves, minced
1 cup crushed or chopped tomatoes
2 tsp curry powder(optional)
3 cups cabbage, chopped finely
1 cup grated carrots
salt and pepper to taste


  1. Heat a large pan on medium heat.
  2. Add olive oil and onions and cook until soft before adding garlic and curry powder. Cook for 1 extra minute.
  3. Add cabbage, carrot and fresh black pepper on top and let steam for 1 minute and then mix well. Cook until desired tenderness is achieved. (About 10 minutes)
  4. Remove from heat and set aside until ready to serve.


You can serve it over any steamed grains or with any flat bread.
