This Ethiopian Buticha recipe is similar to the traditional chickpea spread usually served alongside other Ethiopian dishes.

Traditional recipes use either fava bean flour or chickpea flour, our recipe uses chickpeas.

To Make this recipe, you will need the following:


1 Cup Chickpeas (cooked)
1 Tsp Jalapeno or Red Chili Pepper Flakes
1 Cup water
2 Tbsp Olive Oil
1/2 Cup Red Onion
1 Tsp Mustard
1/2 Lemon, Juiced
Salt & Pepper to Taste


  1. Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until a smooth, pasty consistency is achieved.
  2. Put in container with a lid and place in the refrigerator, to chill, for about one hour before serving.


You can also use this as a spread or a mayonnaise.
